Apple Day in Brightwell

The village I live in, Brightwell cum Sotwell in Oxfordshire held it's 2nd apple day yesterday at the local pub "The Red Lion".

At the pub yesterday traditional ciders could be tasted, this season’s apple juice and honey. Also on sale was some of the varieties of apples, quince, medlars, jams, chutney, honey and apple juice all from our village.

On display was an impressive range of some of the varieties of apples grown in the village, like "Spartan" and "Worcester Pearmain" along with a local expert who provided information about the apples and their history.

An apple survey of the village was conducted earlier this year, finding approximately 250 apple trees. The village lies within 1 mile of Waitrose in Wallingford and 3 miles of Tesco in Didcot and we have 34 different varieties of apple; something the supermarkets could never compete with.

This really was a community affair and is what living in a village is all about! Long may this continue.
