1 of my favourite books for children is "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
I particularly love the version produced by Lauren Child published in 2008.
I was first introduced to the works of Lauren Child with her very famous "Charlie and Lola" series which really started the trend in illustration for using mixed media like photography, magazine cuttings, collage, material and traditional watercolours.
In this book she collaborates with the award winning photographer Polly Borland, theatre designer Emily Jenkins and textile designer Benjamin Duarri. She retells this classic tale in her warm, witty way and together an enchanting miniature world has been recreated. There are so many details on all the pages and my children love spotting something different each time they read it.
I love the textiles particularly as a source of inspiration as I have used many woodland influences in my work.
I particularly love the first page in black ink showing trees and mushrooms, and the repeat patterns used for wallpaper and bedding that are all based on this theme. The whole book has really been thought about right down to the folky patterns featured on the furniture and beautiful colours.
I look foward to Lauren Child's next collaboration.
Will have to look out for these books!
ReplyDeleteI can see why you like these books Helen. It's the detail as well as the design. They will have taken much more time to create than to write.
